Check Out the Video for Leonard Cohen’s “Moving On,” from His Posthumous Album Thanks For The Dance

In November, Colombia Records and Legacy Recordings released Thanks For The Dance, a posthumous release of Leonard Cohen’s produced largely by his son, Adam Cohen (with assitance from Beck, Feist and more), made from vocal tracks that were recorded during sessions for his 2016 album You Want It Darker. The album received universal acclaim, with critics deeming it a beautiful grace note for the late artist.

In celebration of the album, NOWNESS has been collaborating with several filmmakers for their series Thanks for the Dance: Artistic Responses to Leonard Cohen, a collection of video responses to each of the album’s tracks. Friday, they shared the video for “Moving On” by Laure Prouvost and collaborator Ciarán Wood. The video is considered a tribute to one of Cohen’s favorite retreats, the Greek island of Hydra.

“There’s a nostalgic Mediterranean romance in the music and the vocal delivery,” Adam Cohen says in a statement. “We wanted to conjure the narrator’s memories of Hydra, Greece, put him back in the house where he wrote “Bird On A Wire” with the ghostly presence of Marianne in the next room.”

The visual is shot from a first-person perspective, and functions as a quick montage of several ephemeral images. There’s a cat, then an orange floating in water, then a grey-white horse with a rider. It has a romance to it, like everything Cohen does, solidifying the video series as a loving, dedicated tribute.
