Lin-Manuel Miranda Confirms the Hamilton Movie Will Feature Original Broadway Cast

Hamilton, the seventh highest-grossing Broadway musical of all time, will officially get the Hollywood treatment, as Lin-Manuel Miranda confirmed in an interview with Variety.

The hit Broadway musical chronicles the life of immigrant and founding father Alexander Hamilton via hip-hop- and show tune-infused numbers, which has mounted sweeping success as a soundtrack. The show itself has earned critical acclaim, including Tony and Grammy awards.

According to Miranda, the film would be less of an adaptation and more of a medley of footage from recorded stage performances. Hamilton’s original director, Thomas Kail, has supposedly already gathered the required footage.

The original cast consists of Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Jonathan Groff as King George III and Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson. Also featured in the original lineup is Christopher Jackson, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Okieriete Onaodowan, Anthony Ramos and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

As of right now, a movie adaptation of Miranda’s first Broadway musical, In the Heights, is set to hit theaters June 26. There is no word yet on when the Hamilton film would be scheduled for release.
