George R.R. Martin Teams Up with the Dark Souls Developers on a New Role-Playing Game

Big news out of E3: the Game of Thrones guy (sorry, the Song of Ice and Fire guy, for all you real nerds out there) and the team behind the Dark Souls games (and Bloodborne, and Sekiro, and Demon’s Souls) have a hot new collab coming down the pike.

George R.R. Martin, famously behatted writer, and Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of From Software’s famously brutal videogames, are working together on Elden Ring, a new action role-playing game that has that familiar grim and mysterious From vibe. The long-rumored game was confirmed at Microsoft’s E3 press conference today, along with the release of a first teaser. We don’t know exactly how closely Martin worked on this game, but even with the tepid response to the last season of HBO’s show his name should still attract the attention of people outside the typical From fan base.

With the constant speculation over whether Martin will ever actually finish his series of novels, some might question the wisdom of him spending any time on outside projects. (I know at least one Paste editor who will probably be unhappy about this.) But hey, he’s a free man, able to do whatever he wants to do with however much time he has left on this earth, so let the dude make a videogame, if he wants to.

There’s no release date for Elden Ring yet, but it’ll be released by Bandai Namco for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC at some point in the future. Check out that first teaser below.
