Best Coast Announce New Album Always Tomorrow, Share “For The First Time”

California surf-pop outfit Best Coast have returned after more than four years since their last album, 2015’s California Nights. Their latest single, “For The First Time,” is a joyous, laid-back cruise through a West Coast sunset with notes of ’80s nostalgia. The single also comes with the announcement of a forthcoming record, Always Tomorrow, to be released in 2020.

From the beginning of “For The First Time,” it becomes clear that Best Coast have moved away from their roots in lo-fi surf-punk and leaned into the synth. The song opens with a mingling of warm bass, drum machine and arpeggiated synths before opening into a flute-driven groove that conjures up some Cyndi Lauper feeling. The change in sound is unexpected, but not unwelcome as they manage to keep their energy lively while expanding their scope.

While the instrumentation draws from the past, singer Bethany Cosentino’s lyrics are concerned with how she’s progressed over the years. She sings, “The demons deep inside of me / They might have finally been set free.” The overall theme centers on the dynamic lives of humans, and how our personal changes distance us from past versions of ourselves.

The accompanying video shows Cosentino and her bandmate Bobb Bruno sitting idly around a completely empty household, trying to cure their boredom. Near the end of the video, the empty shots of the house are juxtaposed with scenes from an energetic dance party complete with streamers and cute dogs.

Always Tomorrow, which Cosentino first announced last December, is slated for release in 2020, but the group has not set an exact date for it to drop. You can listen to “For The First Time” and a cut from Best Coast’s Daytrotter session below, and find their 2020 tour dates further down. Tickets go on sale Friday, Nov. 8.
