From the Vault: Hear a Young Grimes Perform Visions Demos in 2011

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard a new full-length album from Grimes, a.k.a Canadian electro-pop magician Claire Boucher. Almost three years after her critically acclaimed LP Art Angels arrived in 2015, the musician shared “We Appreciate Power,” what we hoped would be the first single from her forthcoming fifth album.

That was last fall, and even amid much speculation and some clues from Grimes herself dating as far back as early 2018, we haven’t heard anything new beyond the single. That’s alright, though: we have plenty to keep us occupied in the meantime, including Grimes’ breakout 2012 album Visions, which includes the closest thing she has to a hit, the glitchy and shimmery electro-jam “Genesis.”

In fall 2011, Grimes recorded early versions of “Genesis,” as well as fellow Visions cuts “Be A Body” and “Nightmusic,” for a Daytrotter session at Moog Fest in Asheville, N.C. Daytrotter commemorated the performance with an essay published on this day (May 23) in 2013.
