Mitski Releases Chilling Video for “Happy”

Mitski, known for her inventive mix of indie-rock and low-fi, as well as her Twitter account, released the music video for “Happy” today as part of her upcoming album, Puberty 2, for Dead Oceans. She previously released the music video for “Your Best American Girl,” which is another featured song on Puberty 2.

Directed by Maegan Houang and produced by Ben Kuller, the “Happy” music video shows Mitski’s frustration over “the exhausting and exhaustive cycle of the fleeting nature of happiness” through a new medium. Though Mitski isn’t in the video, it accompanies the song by telling the story of a once-happy couple whose relationship begins to fall apart until it reaches a bloody plot twist at the end.

Puberty 2 is Mitski’s fourth album and is set to be released on June 17. Following the release, Mitski will be going on a North American tour beginning on June 20 in New York with three already-sold-out shows. She will be accompanied by Callan Dwan on guitar and Casey Weissbuch on drums. Japanese Breakfast and Jay Som will also make appearances at shows. Watch the “Happy” video above, but be warned: there is some intense gore towards the end of the clip.
