Mobile Streaming Service Quibi Presented At CES

CEO Meg Whitman and Founder Jeffrey Katzenberg presented at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on Wednesday, giving attendees a glimpse into what Quibi will offer when it launches on April 6.

Quibi is one of the buzziest new streaming platforms in the works, even in an already crowded market with established players like Netflix and Apple TV+, as it is creating a slate of made-for-mobile programming that incorporates a phone’s portrait and landscape modes into the viewing experience, a technology the company calls Turnstyle.

With Quibi, subscribers can consume the news, TV and even films that the platform will roll out in short chapters, and can tilt their phones to experience a program in a different way: creators actually film the programs both horizontally and vertically.

Quibi released a star-studded promotional video featuring appearances from film figures like Guillermo del Toro and Peter Farrelly, who are also creating content for the platform. The video surely hypes up Quibi, saying “The future is in your hands” and describing the innovation as “The next evolution of entertainment.”

The platform has already raised raised $1.4 billion in investments.

In addition to Turnstyle, the platform’s signature will be the brevity of its programs. Everything, from shows created by Steven Spielberg to Chrissy Teigen, lasts between just four to 10 minutes, according to the trailer. Subscribers can pay $5 to view Quibi with ads, or $8 ad-free.
