Hamilton Nominated For A Record 16 Tony Awards

Music News

Oh, wait, you’re telling me Hamilton is doing something historic again?

Yeah, Hamilton is doing something historic again. This time, it’s news that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical is nominated for a record-high 16 Tony Awards. The previous mark was shared by Billy Elliot and The Producers, which each garnered 15 noms.

We went through the entire list of nominations and noticed that Hamilton was on the list at least once in every single category for which it’s eligible—twice each for “Best Lead Actor in a Musical” and “Best Featured Actor in a Musical.” Given the critical and popular fervor surrounding the show, it would probably have been a bigger surprise if it were snubbed in any category. We’ll be far more interested to see what happens on Jul. 12, when the actual Tony Awards take place (though, again, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise for Hamilton to sweep everything).

Fatigue aside, it would be irresponsible to lose sight of how awesome and groundbreaking Hamilton has been. Feel free to check out some of our thoughts on the musical, from its significance for hip-hop to the reasons it dominated 2015 and will keep dominating 2016.
