Showtime’s Sunday night lineup has been outstanding so far this year. Maybe it’s the rebirth of stars such as David Duchovny, Matt LeBlanc and William H. Macy; or perhaps it’s the refreshing string of compelling storylines. Regardless, the two-hour block of Californication, Episodes and Shameless has continued Showtime’s string of brilliant shows. In “Lights, Camera, Asshole,” we find Hank caught in the crossfires his usual antics once again in an entertaining, but relatively superficial episode. Sasha is back on board thanks to Eddie Nero and Fucking and Punching seems to be moving full steam ahead. Not only that, but Sasha has asked for Hank to “polish her dialogue” on her upcoming blockbuster zombie-cop action thriller sequel. Hank’s a skeptic as always—until he learns that the one-week gig will reap a nice little paycheck of $100,000.... read more

After last week’s episode concluded with Abby seducing Hank despite firing the writer, “The Recused” opens with Hank and Abby the morning after facing with a new dilemma. “We had sex, you made me cum,” Abby straightforwardly says. “now we have a serious conflict.” Abby had offers to take Hank back as a client, on the one condition she can’t continue to have sex with him, despite Hank’s hardest attempts to persuade her otherwise. Since he can’t have his cake and eat it too, he opts for sex and a new lawyer.... read more

In last week’s episode, “Freeze Frame,” viewers were left with a parting image of Sasha and Mia’s hands down Hank’s unzipped pants. An L.A. partygoer captured that moment on camera, sharing it across the Internet. After Hank seemed in the clear with a plea bargain lined, the writer could not have messed up at a more inopportune time. As Season 4 continues, it’s baffling how often Hank gets himself in dire straits. Hank’s tragic flaws are the heart of the show, but it’s increasingly difficult to watch him mess up time and time again.... read more

So far in Season 4 of Californication, the show has taken a nosedive away from its strong suits, opting more for shock value instead of the character and plot development so pivotal throughout the show’s first three seasons. Last week’s episode “Monkey Business” hit a low point for the show, with a bizarre introduction to Fucking and Punching’s principal financier, weird monkey scenarios and a trite Queens of Dogtown subplot.... read more

As much of Californication’s appeal on the surface comes from the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll it portrays, the show’s strong suit has always been its characters. Once you got beyond all the careless debauchery and self-destruction by Hank and company, there has been a certain authenticity exuded throughout the show’s storyline. Throughout Season 4, however, the writing has started to turn away from the formula Californication was so successful at. The character depth is still present on some levels, but in “Monkey Business,” a noticeable void emerges.... read more

In “Home Sweet Home,” Hank wakes up from his accidental overdose in the hospital with a pumped stomach and a condescending doctor breathing down his throat. “Guess what asshole?” his doctor snidely barks at Hanks. “There’s no such thing as a good looking corpse.” But after a rude awakening, Karen shows up sympathetically at Hank’s hospital bedside, much to the Hank’s surprise, and takes him back to their humble abode.... read more
