Sasquatch 2008: Day 1
Welcome to The Gorge, y'all. Sasquatch 2008 is here and it's overwhelming. So, in an effort to trim it down to something semi-manageable, I'm going to be posting photos and blurbs of my experience in Washington this Memorial Day Weekend. Enjoy... Kathleen Edwards rocked with an immaculate band, spitting bile at the sun, particularly on set closer "The Cheapest Key." Edwards sang "B is for bullshit and you fed me some," but I'd argue that "B" is actually for "badass." She is just that.... read more

Way back in January, we told you that R.E.M. had netted quite a pair of openers for its Accelerate tour. Who were the lucky guests? A little band called The National, which did pretty well in an obscure ranking of the best albums of 2007, and another group of rapscallions who have designated themselves Modest Mouse, and who also happened to do serious damage to that little list we just mentioned. The latter group has decided that hanging out with R.E.M. is all well and good, but headlining is really where the fun is, which is why Modest Mouse has... read more

At an all-night diner, one might find a sign that says "XXX" (but they were talking about root beer, dontcha know) or the pancake option known as the "short stack"—instead of four hot, delicious flapjacks, you get a just-as-tasty, but cheaper, two. The men of Modest Mouse, no strangers to the 3 a.m. eatery, will serve up their own short stack of songs later this year, according to a recent Rolling Stone interview with frontman Isaac Brock. Brock disclosed a wealth of information, telling RS that the EP will contain cuts like "The Whale Song," "Satellite Skin" and a collaboration... read more

BLIZZARD OF ODD Welcome to Sony Pictures Studios, serving all your production needs now and in the future. This cheerfully innocuous sign greets visitors to Sony Pictures Studios’ famous Stage 27 in Culver City, Calif., essentially Glitterville’s Ground Zero, and the site where the Wizard of Oz’s Munchkinland scenes were filmed nearly 70 years ago. It’s a place that has witnessed more than its share of cinematic oddities over the years (Under the Rainbow, anybody?) and, in this context, the project currently occupying the mammoth 32,000-square-foot facility is just another brick in the wall of historic Tinseltown weirdness. Formerly-indie rock... read more

Modest Mouse fans have a mere 18 days left before We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank hits stores, but the overeager can satisfy their Mouse cravings by watching the video for the first single, “Dashboard,” here. In keeping with the nautical theme of the album’s title, the video features a tall-tale involving frontman Isaac Brock as a sea-faring captain, a big boat, a bigger fish and a microphone instead of a hook. It makes sense when you see it. Sort of. Around the time the album comes out on March 20, be sure to be on the lookout... read more

The next Modest Mouse record won’t be out for months (their label’s best guess has it emerging in early March) but at Epic Records’ New York office, Paste staffers Reid Davis and Nate Douglas recently got a sneak preview of ten songs from the new disc, tentatively entitled We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank. Those worried about the potentially transformative influence of ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr can rest easy, as Marr’s work (featured on the entire record) enhances the core sounds favored by Mouse frontman Isaac Brock. To our ears, Brock’s shouted rants, driving basslines and percussive arrangements... read more
