Songs to Do Nothing To: The Motion Picture Soundtrack to Lazy
Guess who's feeling unmotivated? This guy! Sometimes, though, it's fun to channel an apathetic mood into something productive. A soundtrack to lazy, as it were. The key here is to ignore what the song is actually about (listening requires motivation), choosing instead to base its inclusion off the title alone. Have a look at the list below (which I'm capping at 15, since any more than that would be too much work), click where applicable to hear the track and feel free to post your favorite lethargic lyrics, tired tunes, melodies of malaise and sleepy song choices in the comments.... read more
Found in: Blogs, List of the DaySteve Albini Publishes Love of Vegetables, Record Stores
As you may have been able to tell from the plethora of posts about Record Store Day, April 18 was a big day for indie-music retailing. After all, the record store is one of the most enduring establishments of this little subculture we call rock 'n' roll; who can forget the excitement of going down to your local mom-n-pop on Tuesdays and scoping out the new releases? Evidently, not erstwhile Big Black frontman Steve Albini, who we've learned (from Daily Swarm) cut a rather whimsical ad in support of Record Store Day.... read more
Found in: Culture, News50 Best Bob Dylan Covers of All Time
As we began to compile this list of the 50 Best Bob Dylan Covers of All Time—asking for input from Paste readers, writers and editors—someone suggested that it might be easier to compile a list of artists who haven't covered Dylan. I've listened to literally hundreds of Dylan covers over the course of the past week, trying to weigh choices like, "Who's version of 'Tomorrow Is a Long Time' is better, Nick Drake or Nickel Creek?" But I don't mean to make it sound like grueling work. My biggest take-away from this exercise is that going to Dylan for source... read more
Found in: Blogs, List of the DayCan you spot the fake Neil Young song titles?
Tireless bard Neil Young recently released his eight-millionth album, Fork In The Road, which includes such songs as “Fork In The Road,” “Hit The Road” and “Off The Road.” Though we’re joking about how many albums Neil has released (it’s really nine million), we are not joking about these song titles. And we wondered whether you, the devoted Paste reader, could tell the difference between other real song titles on the new Neil Young record and a bunch we just made up. Five of the below are real, and the rest are fake. Get to guessing, and scroll down for... read more
Found in: Blogs, List of the DayListen to Neil Young's Fork in the Road on MySpace
After four decades in the recording industry, Neil Young basically has a license to do whatever he wants, whether that means penning a graphic novel, giving unsolicited advice to Detroit's Big Three, or even having a species of spider named after him. So if Neil Young wants to stream his new album online for free (a week before it hits the shelves), then, by God, that's what's happening.... read more

Found in: Music, NewsNeil Young releases two videos for "Johnny Magic"
Remember the double-disc album the Bravery did, The Sun and The Moon, where the band released a set of songs on the first disc and redid them on the second? That was kind of cool, kind of fun. Neil Young has tried the same thing with his most recent video releases, but apparently doesn't understand that in order to pull this off, it's important that the variation be, well, a variation. His videos for "Johnny Magic" are exceptionally similar.... read more
Found in: Music, NewsSam Raimi and Jonathan Demme plan SXSW screenings
You may remember our coverage about the screening of Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell in L.A. The movie is his return to directing horror movies. At that time the film was still incomplete, and apparently Raimi will offer another sneak peak of the project in its still-unfinished form at this year's SXSW. Also on the incomplete front, a screening of Jonathan Demme's not-quite-complete documentary about Neil Young will go down as well.... read more

Neil Young, consummate singer/songwriter/environmentalist that he is, has been quietly plugging away on the Lincvolt project for more than a year now. Unbeknownst to us, though, was the fact that he's been using his efforts to get his creative juices flowing for his next album, which is nearly ready to hit the streets. Young's latest LP, Fork in the Road, is slated for an April 7 release.... read more

With last week's inauguration of new President Barack Obama, there's been a lot of talk about green-collar jobs and making long-term investments by implementing environmentally sound policies now. It got me thinking about what we're protecting by doing this—first and foremost, the health and well-being of ourselves and future generations. But it's also about preserving this beautiful natural world we inhabit. There is no shortage of amazing songs that celebrate or draw from this beauty. Classics like John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High" and The Beatles' "Blackbird" come immediately to mind, but there are so many more. Here are a few... read more
