The Coolest Beatles Songs You Might Have Missed
Today's list begins a series that will recur every Friday for the next few weeks, in which I'll highlight my favorite lesser-known Beatles tracks. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr wrote and recorded such consistently amazing songs that, even if you ignore all their #1 hits and everything on their famous Red and Blue best-of compilations (which I'll be doing for these more obscure Beatles lists), there are still dozens and dozens of amazing songs, some of which you might've missed along the way—even if The Beatles are the biggest, most influential band in rock history. As you... read more

Right around the time The Beatles crafted such pop classics as "Penny Lane," "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" in 1967, the band had fully immersed itself in its newfound experimentation with psychedelia and avant-garde pop. The result? A long-rumored 14-minute track entitled "Carnival of Light," which up until recently had been nothing more than a ghost in the minds of Beatles fans.... read more

It seems the Macca camp has been getting busy on the web as of late. In addition to the flash-heavy Meyesight.com (a subscription-based site filled with images of Paul McCartney's paintings, as well as videos, photographs and famous quotes), there's MemoryAlmostFull.com/youtellme, which features technology that allows visitors to ask questions and receive an instant, pre-recorded video response from McCartney. Answers are triggered by keywords, so you must ask very specific questions about song titles, names or dates, or you'll end up with an “I don't know" or a yawn from the bass-playing former Beatle. When we asked McCartney what his... read more
Found in: Music, NewsPaul McCartney considering Shrek soundtrack, cameo
Paul McCartney's (apparent) unofficial manager, his three-year-old daughter, Beatrice, has likely yet to comprehend her father's cultural impact. She probably thinks he spends too much time in coffee shops, and would get a big break if only he'd put that spot-on Shrek impersonation to good use. Fortunately for her, and anyone who enjoys movies with relentless pop culture references pre-dating Smash Mouth, McCartney is talking to the producers of Shrek 4 about composing its soundtrack and garnering a minor speaking part. It won't be the first time the ex-Beatle has contributed to the endlessly lucrative fairy tale franchise - his... read more

Like his predecessors Rachael Ray, Oprah, and Pinky and the Brain, Paul McCartney is slowly inching his way toward taking over the world. But unlike the others, Sir Paul can play the Beatles card--and we don't mind. A new three-volume DVD set--The McCartney Years (Nov. 18)--will include live performances, solo music videos and the charming Brit's commentary. Volumes one and two will contain music videos that start in the 1970s (during McCartney's Wings years) and end with 2005's Fine Line. Watch them chronologically or in a playlist arranged by McCartney himself. Volume three, meanwhile, will contain live shows from Wings'... read more
