Watch the First-Look Trailer for Anna Paquin’s Bellevue, Set to Premiere in 2018
Photo: WGN AmericaAcademy Award winner Anna Paquin stars as Detective Annie Ryder in the first trailer for WGN America’s Bellevue, set to premiere January 23, 2018 at 10 p.m. In the eight-episode crime drama, a Canadian import, Ryder investigates the disappearance of a high school hockey star—who’s “wrestling with his gender identity,” per the network’s synopsis—in a small town still traumatized by the murder of a young woman 20 years earlier.
As she digs deeper into the case, a gulf opens between Ryder and her family, just as a mysterious person from her past re-enters her life—and begins to play mind games. The series co-stars Shawn Doyle (House of Cards, Fargo) as Ryder’s boss, Chief Peter Welland, and Downton Abbey’s Allen Leech as her on-again/off-again love interest, Eddie. (Read Paste’s interview with Leech here.)
Bellevue, which first aired on CBC, is part of WGN America’s new “Prime Crime” programming strategy, including 100 Code, Shoot the Messenger and Pure. The network’s new direction comes on the heels of Sinclair Broadcast Group’s purchase of Tribune Media, which owned WGN, in May, and the cancellation of its buzzy slate of original series, such as the acclaimed Manhattan and Underground and the popular Salem and Outsiders.
