Caroline Rose has released her latest music video “Bikini”—the fourth in a line of music videos accompanying Rose’s 2018 album LONER.
The second of the four music videos to be directed by Rose, the first being “Soul No. 5,” “Bikini” plays with the theme of female objectification.
“A lot of my aesthetic tends to be very tongue-in-cheek, so I wanted to take a serious subject, in this case misogyny, and just sort of turn it around to laugh at it. I think satire can be used as an incredible tool to take the power away from the powerful when necessary,” Rose said.
The video is based around game shows like The Price Is Right and TV performances from the ‘60s and ‘70s, and it incorporates brightly colored backgrounds and bikinis. Diverging from the image of models with idealized bodies, the video aims for body positivity in its cast of bikini-donning women. Rose, who is influenced by film, particularly cites Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar as a source of inspiration in the making of her music video. Similar to Almodóvar’s use of visuals, Rose emphasizes the absurdism of a realistic situation through her visual choices; the garish makeup and stiff, programmed movements of the models tie them more closely to animated mannequins on display rather than women. The end of the video sees a change in energy with these women breaking out of their tightly orchestrated movements.
Fans have the opportunity to see Rose outside of the screen on tour with several dates being added to her previously announced June tour. She will also be touring Europe and the U.K. in July, and will be supporting Rainbow Kitten Surprise on tour in September.
