Cary Fukunaga, David Lowery to Adapt Joe Dante’s Explorers for Paramount Television

Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery are teaming up to write a pilot script for Paramount Television based on director Joe Dante’s beloved 1985 film Explorers, per Deadline. Fukunaga and Lowery will write the script and story bible, and one of them will direct the pilot if it gets picked up.

Explorers follows a boy obsessed with ‘50s sci-fi alien movies, who, with the help of his friends, ends up building a spaceship of his own.

Fukunaga directed and executive produced the mind-bending first season of Maniac, which recently premiered on Netflix, and is also set to direct Bond 25. Lowery directed the first two episodes of Strange Angel, which premiered this summer on CBS All Access, and also just signed on to direct the fantasy epic Green Knight for A24.

Fukunaga and Hayden Kiessling of Parliament of Owls will executive produce the Explorers pilot, joined by Lowery, James Johnston and Toby Halbrooks of Sailer Bear Prods, plus the movie’s screenwriter, Erik Luke. Fukunaga has a first-look TV deal at Paramount, for which he served as executive producer on TNT’s The Alienist.
