Check Out Sturgill Simpson’s “Sugar Daddy,” The Theme Song For HBO’s Vinyl

We’re pretty stoked about Vinyl, HBO’s upcoming (fictional) deep dive into the music industry of the ‘70s. We’re even more stoked about the soundtrack, which will include such artists as Otis Redding, Chris Cornell and Iggy Pop as it unfolds in numerous volumes over the coming weeks.

Today, we got a taste of Sturgill Simpson’s contribution: “Sugar Daddy,” which doubles as the show’s theme song. It’s a throwback to the heavy Southern rock that was popular in the early 1970s, from the chorus effect on Simpson’s voice to the crunchy blues chords that form the song’s backbone. If not for the undeniably modern-sounding outlaw country drums, this could be a track by Mountain or Skynyrd. Have a listen below.

Vinyl premieres on Sunday on HBO. The first volume of its extensive soundtrack will be released tomorrow by Atlantic Records.
