Economist Bryan Caplan & Illustrator Zach Weinersmith Argue for a More Open World
Art by Zach WeinersmithIt’s something of an understatement to state that borders and immigration are… controversial topics in 2019 America. Without diving too deeply into our current political administration’s inhumane actions, it’s probably accurate to say that immigration is, along with climate change, one of the most divisive—and poorly understood—issues of our time. Publisher First Second, known for some of the finest all-ages and nonfiction comics on the market, is adding its voice to the conversation this fall with the release of Open Borders: The Science and Ethics of Immigration from economist Bryan Caplan and illustrator Zach Weinersmith.
Open Borders argues for just that: the global disintegration of arbitrary borders and an invigorated system of international immigration. With a conversational tone, ample research and lively illustrations from Weinersmith, Caplan explains how opening borders could eliminate extreme poverty and usher in a booming worldwide economy, benefiting all of humanity. It’s a lofty argument, but a welcome counterpoint to the rampant fear-mongering that all too often dominates airwaves and political campaigns.
