Daily Dose: NANCY, “French Cinnamon”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

NANCY, the enigmatic English dream-pop project of an as-of-yet-unnamed singer-songwriter, has released the second single, “French Cinnamon,” from their forthcoming debut EP Mysterious Visions, out Nov. 9 through Cannibal Hymns/B3SCI.

NANCY first emerged on the scene with a cover of Nancy Sinatra’s “Boots,” and their love of vintage-pop stylings has become an important component in their androgyne-glam shell. NANCY’s songs find FM radio gold corroding into strange, misshapen forms.

The structure of “French Cinnamon” is familiar, but the fun comes from NANCY’s knack for dunking the whole thing in oil and deep-frying it. It sounds a bit like a long-lost prom song from the era of baby-blue suits, if the cassette it was on was dug up Jumanji-style and given to some pedal-heads to fiddle with. It’s a process you can recreate yourself if you preorder the Mysterious Visions cassette, complete with cigarette casing. “Like cigarettes, my fantasy world is highly addictive and probably bad for you,” NANCY said in a statement. At least with “French Cinnamon,” it’s hard to say they’re all that wrong.

Listen to “French Cinnamon” below, and find the Mysterious Visions album art and tracklist further down. Keep an eye out for NANCY on tour: They’ll perform at SXSW and in several U.S. cities (including L.A. and New York) next year.
