Enjoy Guillermo Ochoa’s Brilliant, One-Handed Save

71 percent of the world is covered by water; the rest is covered by Guillermo Ochoa. It’s an old joke that can be applied to pretty much every sport, but in this case seems particularly apt, given that the Mexico international recently pulled off one of the better saves you’re going to see this week.

On Thursday evening, Athletic Cup de Bilbao eliminated Ochoa’s Malaga from the Copa del Rey. The two teams were locked in a scoreless draw after the first leg, when a goal early in the second half from Aritz Aduriz saw the Basque club advance to the next round of the competition. That scoreline could have been worse, were it not for Ochoa, who pulled off a beautiful reaction save early in the first half to keep his side level. However, given that he was eventually beaten, perhaps the above saying should be amended to 71 percent of the world is covered by water, 28 percent is covered by Ochoa, and the remaining one percent is covered by Basque goalscorers. It doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, but does fit the given situation.
