Grace and Frankie Is Now Netflix’s Longest-Running Original Series

Netflix has renewed its Jane Fonda- and Lily Tomlin-led comedy series Grace and Frankie for a seventh and final season, the streamer announced on Wednesday.

At 94 episodes, the Emmy-nominated series now becomes Netflix’s longest-running original show across genres, a distinction previously held by the recently ended Orange Is the New Black’s 91 episodes. (Those of you keeping score at home, though, will note that OITNB had hourlong episodes, as opposed to Grace and Frankie’s half-hour installments.) There’s no word yet on when Grace and Frankie’s 16-episode Season Seven will air—Season Six wrapped production earlier this year ahead of a January 2020 premiere.

“It’s thrilling and somehow fitting that our show about the challenges, as well as the beauty and dignity of aging, will be the oldest show on Netflix,” said Grace and Frankie co-creators and showrunners Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris in a statement.

Stars Fonda and Tomlin issued a bittersweet statement of their own, celebrating the series’ longevity while also mourning its end (and wondering what kind of world its final episodes will be released into a year or two from now):

We are both delighted and heartbroken that Grace and Frankie will be back for its seventh, though final, season. We’re so grateful that our show has been able to deal with issues that have really connected to our grand generation. And their kids, and amazingly, their kids as well! We’ll miss these two old gals, Grace and Frankie, as much as many of their fans will, but we’ll still be around. We’ve outlasted so many things—just hope we don’t outlast the planet.

Season Six stars Fonda and Tomlin alongside Sam Waterston, Martin Sheen, June Diane Raphael, Brooklyn Decker, Baron Vaughn and Ethan Embry, all of whom reprise their roles for the series’ seventh and final season. Also returning as showrunners and executive producers are Kauffman and Morris, joined by fellow EPs Fonda, Tomlin, Paula Weinstein and Robbie Tollin, as well as Skydance Television’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross.

Through its first five seasons, Grace and Frankie has garnered 11 Emmy nominations, six Screen Actors Guild Award nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. Most of its acclaim keys on Fonda and Tomlin’s lead performances as the titular women, whose lives are upended when their husbands come out as gay and leave Grace and Frankie for each other. The old gals’ subsequent bond has made for some serious streaming series staying power.
