Homeshake, the weirdo-pop project of Montreal songwriter Peter Sagar, has released “Like Mariah,” the first single off his forthcoming album Helium, out Feb. 15, 2019, through Sinderlyn.
The single builds on Homeshake’s 2017 album Fresh Air by providing a continuation of the style that has come to define Sagar’s work as Homeshake: dreamy, floating falsettos, punchy synth bass lines and a general feeling of weightlessness. Helium may be the most apt title yet for a Homeshake release, even with such gems as Midnight Snack and In The Shower.
More than any individual instrumental trademark, “Like Mariah” captures that most ineffable quality of Sagar’s songwriting, which is the ability to provide shape and texture. His songs are weightless, yes, but they bump and wiggle in all the right ways. It’s like walking through a room that’s intermittently colored with flashes of neon light—briefly, brilliantly colorful, then right back to the subdued slink.
