Anti-Theresa May Song That UK Radio Can't Play Hits Number One

Prime Minister Theresa May is not popular among the artistic community in the U.K.—we know this is shocking. It might be her and her fellow Tories’ stringent policies, or it might be because she just plain sucks. While it’s most likely the latter, U.K. group Captain Ska is experiencing the effects of stringent censorship by May’s media mogul friends; their politically charged tune “Liar Liar GE2017” is forbidden to play on U.K. radio stations despite major popularity because it speaks poorly of May.

“Liar Liar GE2017” is a fully political reggae jam, taking on May’s tendency to flip-flop on issues like denying a possibility for an early election and championing economic equality—both of which May has changed positioning on. Lyrics include, “I want to have a government that doesn’t think that fascism is where it’s at,” while repeatedly calling May a liar. According to Jake from Captain Ska, the song was written “to expose the horrific effects Tory policy has had on ordinary people.”

While it won’t be heard on the radio—British radio stations are required to remain impartial ahead of the June 8 general election—”Liar Liar GE2017” has snagged the top spot on the iTunes singles chart for all of the UK. All proceeds from the track’s sales from May 26 to June 8 will be split between U.K. food banks and The People’s Assembly Against Austerity. Captain Ska also aren’t the only U.K. artists taking a stand against May; last week we reported on Lily Allen sending fans unheard demos in exchange for proof of their voter registration.
