Daily Dose: Valley Queen, “Ride”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

California psych-rockers Valley Queen have shared the third single from their forthcoming debut album, Supergiant, out July 13 via Roll Call Records. It’s called “Ride,” and if the record’s second single, the hurried “Boiling Water,” is Supergiant’s tipping point, then “Ride” could be its steady incline. “Boiling Water” and the title track are rollercoaster headbangers, but “Ride” takes its time, slowly building feeling and sound until an emotional bridge has been constructed. Listen to the new track below.

Valley Queen are releasing their debut album next month, but from the media attention they’ve been getting, you’d assume they’re headed for a sophomore or even third release. And it seems the hype might be deserved—the first three singles from Supergiant signal an emotionally complex and sonically engaging LP to come, with “Ride” playing the role of soulful rock ballad. Smooth and seamless, frontwoman Natalie Carol’s sweetly textured voice continues to stun on the band’s new track, but in a much more commanding fashion than on “Boiling Water” or “Supergiant.” For Carol, the song is a nerve-wracking response to a pregnancy scare, as she told FLOOD magazine, but her sharp lyrics feel versatile enough to harbor any number of strenuous feelings one might encounter on an emotional “ride.”

The band has also announced more fall tour dates, expanding their already-busy schedule. They’ll make stops in Seattle, Boston, Brooklyn and their native Los Angeles, among many other cities. Find their tour dates below. Listen to “Supergiant” and “Boiling Water” here and here, respectively.
