Wildflower Blues, the new album by Jolie Holland and Samantha Parton, marks a happy reunion. Holland and Parton, the Canadian duo who founded The Be Good Tanyas in 1999, hadn’t played together in years, with Parton continuing to lead the Tanyas and Holland having long since split for a solo career. But the two seem to have had no problem picking up where they left off, as Paste wrote in our review of Wildflower Blues, with an assured, unhurried chemistry that and a common devotion to a musical cause. “The songs come across as low-lit, sultry shuffles,” we wrote, “easy and ambling, with the faint lilt of a lullaby and Southern charm. Holland and Parton coauthored the majority of the songs, tossing in a couple covers—Townes Van Zandt’s ‘You Are Not Needed Now’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Minstrel Boy’—without losing the album’s overall consistency. Even when their burnished harmonies rise above a whisper, the tenuous blend of soul, nocturnal jazz and unassuming folk finesse keeps the music from overstepping any bounds.”
