One of fashion’s most private designers, Dries Van Noten opens a door to his intimate world in the forthcoming documentary Dries. Watch the trailer above to get a first glimpse at the behind-the-scenes magic of Dries and his team.
The Belgian designer first broke through the tightly packed fashion door with his Spring/Summer 2015 show, which featured models lounging languidly on a mossy green runway inspired by John Everett Millais’ Pre-Raphaelite painting Ophelia. We get a look at the now-iconic show in the first moments of the trailer in all its dreamy glory, as the models simply lay down on the runway instead of doing the traditional final walk. The documentary is produced by Reiner Holzemer, who told Harper’s Bazaar that it took some convincing to get Dries on board: “It took me a very long time to convince Dries to share his passions, his creative and intimate world in front of a camera,” said Holzemer. “I followed him for a whole year, and I think I came as close to him and his world as it is possible.”
In the trailer, Dries says, “The word fashion, I don’t like, because fashion means something which is over in six months. I would like to find a word which is more timeless.” The documentary will look at Dries’ 25-year career, and how he has pursued the daunting task of making a collection stand the test of time. It’s an exciting moment for Dries, who will celebrate his 100th show on March 1, a significant fashion milestone. He’s says he’s going to keep it somewhat low key, especially after the designer threw an extravagant dinner party on an enormous 450-foot table for his 50th show in 2004.
Dries the documentary doesn’t have a release date yet, but will likely debut sometime this year. Check out the full collection of Dries’ Woman Spring/Summer 2017 looks here. We’re particularly big fans of runway look number 18. Flip-flops, a black cap and gold-patterned shorts? Big mood for spring this year.
