Watch the Trailer for Angelina Jolie’s The Breadwinner

The first trailer for The Breadwinner has arrived, and it is a treat for the eyes—as it should be, with animation studio Cartoon Saloon behind it.

The film follows Parvana (Saara Chaudry), a young girl in Taliban-occupied Afghanistan, who cuts her hair and acts as a boy to save her family and her father Nurullah (Ali Badshah). Perhaps the most interesting thing about the trailer is the way it changes in tone—starting in strict realism, we end up getting fantastical stories with visuals to match by the end.

The film is directed by Cartoon Saloon veteran Nora Twomey, written by Anita Doron and executive produced by Angelina Jolie.

This is the latest of many passion projects for Jolie that shine a light on humanitarian causes—her directorial debut, In The Land of Blood And Honey, was set during the Bosnian War, after all. The film also fits into Cartoon Saloon’s wheelhouse of fantastical coming-of-age stories, although the Irish studio has focused on Irish and Celtic stories in the past with their Oscar-nominated films The Secret of Kells and The Song of the Sea. New York studio GKIDS is distributing the release.

The Breadwinner comes out in limited release on Nov. 17. Watch the trailer above, and check out the film’s poster below.
