West Ham Ladies’ Upton Park Charity Match Cancelled On Account of Sexism
Photo by Bryn LennonA match to raise money for the West Ham Ladies team was cancelled by the club due to ”…direct comments from supporters, a poll conducted on the official website and fan feedback on social media,” according to a notice on West Ham’s website.
As the BBC reports, the backlash came from the wish among fans to ensure the last match played at the Boleyn Ground was the club’s 3-2 victory over Manchester United (the Hammers are moving to the Olympic Stadium next after 112 years at their East London digs):
The match, between West Ham Ladies and a West Ham ‘All Stars’ team, was the brainchild of Jack Sullivan, the son of West Ham co-chairman David.
West Ham Ladies Joint-Chairman Stephen Hunt said: “Obviously the Ladies are disappointed but myself and Jack Sullivan will get together over the summer to see what else we can do in the future.
Nevermind that the match in question would have been a non-competitive charity event for a West Ham club, one for which supporters voted in favour; the Ladies aren’t a “real team” and they cannot besmirch the sacred ground where all time club legends like Aaron Cresswell and Darren Randolph trod, earning a victory which saw the club finish 7th.
