Gorillaz Are Finally Back With the Political New Song/Video “Hallelujah Money”

Stop everything, Gorillaz are back.

News has been slowly but surely trickling out about the progress Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have been making on the band’s new album, their first since 2011’s The Fall, but today we get our first actual taste of the record, shared via Uproxx. “Hallelujah Money,” which features British singer-songwriter Benjamin Clementine, takes aim at the politics of the time in the form of a sarcastic hymnal. Clementine sings about “building walls” being the best way to protect against “scarecrows from the Far East” before singing the titular phrase. Albarn enters to provide some hesitant optimism, singing, “When the morning comes, we are still human. How will we know? How will we dream? How will we love?” The video shows Clementine singing over projections of the KKK, rainbows and a swinging Liberty Bell.

The song is beautiful and terrifying, and arrives the day before Donald Trump takes over control of the United States. At least we have a new Gorillaz album to look forward to …

Watch the video for “Hallelujah Money” above, and wait impatiently as Albarn and Hewlett get back to work to get us a full record.
