Sense8 to Return for Two-Hour Special After Fan Push

Do you hear that sound? It’s the sound of Gay Twitter collectively celebrating the news that Sense8 will return for one more show, a two-hour special.

Weeks after the show was canceled, amid online petitions and pleading hashtags, co-creator Lana Wachowski announced Thursday via Sense8’s social media pages that the series will return for a grand finale episode. After admitting the crushing depression she felt when struggling with the show’s cancellation amidst an outpouring of fan support, Wachowski wrote, “Improbably, unforeseeably, your love has brought Sense8 back to life. (I could kiss every single one of you!).”

A two-hour Christmas special was released in 2016 when the possibility of a second season was still up in the air, and it seems fans of the show have pressured Netflix again to give the show the closure it deserves with a proper finale.

Wachowski admitted that “the numbers have always been challenging,” but Netflix will release a two-hour special in 2018. “After that … if this experience has taught me anything,” Lana added, “you NEVER know.” Netflix canceled the show in early June, making it one of the first of their original series to be canceled along with The Get Down, Marco Polo and Girlboss.

Later that day, Netflix released a video of the sensates singing along to the song “What’s Up” by 4 Non Blondes—the song has become an anthem for the show after being featured in the end of season one’s pilot. Here’s hoping the Wachowskis fulfill every fan desire to see justice served to those who have antagonized the sensates the past two seasons, including Sun’s brother Joong-Ki Bak, Agent Bendix and Dr. Whispers.

The series has been lauded for centering queer characters and queer sex on television. This achievement created a passionate, if small, fan base for the series that has fought repeatedly for the show to survive. Further details on when the special will stream on Netflix are unknown.
