Run The Jewels Announced as 2018 Record Store Day Ambassadors

Hip-hop duo Run The Jewels have been announced as the ambassadors for Record Store Day 2018, taking place on April 21.

Made up of rapper and Atlanta’s own Killer Mike and rapper/producer El-P, Run The Jewels have released three studio albums. Their latest album, Run The Jewels 3, came out in late 2016 to much critical acclaim. Paste ranked RTJ3 at #4 on our list of the best albums Of 2017, with writer Stephen F. Kearse declaring that they’ve now become “full-fledged juggernauts.”

“I can’t tell you how proud I am to be the least wealthy Record Store Day Ambassador,” said El-P when the news was announced on SiriusXM. “This is a community that I’ve always been a part of, so when I was asked to do it, I said ‘of course!’ I’m honored and it means something to me … I’m really grateful to do this.”

“Indie stores fostered my love of Rap. Super Sounds in Atlanta [and Decatur] were my havens as a kid,” said Killer Mike. “That’s where I heard new music, argued about our favorite artists and even met some artists there. I lived for the day I was a poster on the wall.”

2018 will mark only the second time the event picks a rap artist as their ambassadors, with the first being Chuck D back in 2014. Previous ambassadors have included St. Vincent, Jack White, Iggy Pop, Ozzy Osbourne and Dave Grohl.

Earlier this month, Run The Jewels announced their plans to release their second craft beer, the Panther Like a Panther Stout, which follows their 2017 craft beer debut: the hop-heavy Stay Gold IPA.

El-P recently teased RTJ4, tweeting, “fithy, [sic] dirty, dusty plans unfolding with @KillerMike #RTJ4.” We can’t wait.
