See Oscar Winner Brie Larson as Captain Marvel in First Look From Set

It’s an exciting time for Marvel as production begins on the the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first film to focus solely on a lead female superhero. Academy Award winner Brie Larson (who won Best Actress for 2015’s Room) stars as Carol Danvers who, according to the film’s official synopsis, “becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.” The ’90s-set film is described as “an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Some other big news revolves around the release of the film’s entire cast list. Since Captain Marvel takes place in the ’90s, Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson will make his first appearance in the MCU since his death in 2012’s The Avengers. Gregg has been headlining Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for the time being, which takes place (obviously) before the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Captain Marvel’s full cast includes Larson, Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, DeWanda Wise, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace, with Jude Law. It appears that Pace will be reprising his role as Guardians villain Ronan, with Hounsou returning to play his minion.

According to the comics and the Guardians films, Ronan is a Kree zealot. Captain Marvel supposedly centers on a war between the Kree and the Skrulls, the latter being the direct enemies of Captain Marvel. Many are hypothesizing that this film will reveal some unknown secrets about the MCU from the ’90s.

Currently, Captain Marvel shoots in Los Angeles, which serves as a production home base, but the film will also shoot in Fresno, as well as locations in Louisiana, including Baton Rouge and New Orleans, according to Collider. Larson has been working for months learning how to fly, so check out this first photo from set today below and further down, see Larson’s post from her training.
