Florence + The Machine Debut Latest Single, “Big God”

Florence + The Machine have released “Big God,” the third single from their forthcoming album High As Hope.

“Big God” was co-written by frontwoman Florence Welch and Jamie xx of (you guessed it) The xx. The track also features a saxophone solo by Kamasi Washington, who performed at the Paste Studio in 2016.

The band’s previous music has an opulent, anthemic quality that is missing from their new track. “Big God” is sparser, but gorgeously so. If Welch’s ethereal vocals made her sound like a goddess on previous tracks, she’s a distinctly grounded one on “Big God” as she sings of messages left on read and a lopsided relationship. “Is it just part of the process? / Jesus Christ, it hurts,” she asks, and the small wounds feel all too real.

Florence + The Machine have already released “Sky Full of Song” and “Hunger” from their fourth studio album High As Hope, which is due out on June 29. The band will embark on a North American tour in August; find a full list of stops here.
