August has indeed slipped away into a moment in time—Fall is literally just around the corner. The signs are all there: Labor Day sales, the return of pumpkin spice lattes, a million Facebook updates about your friends’ kids’ various first days at school, and a terrifying glut of new books arriving at your local bookseller. In the publishing world, this is truly the most wonderful time of the year, the months when big-name authors drop super-anticipated titles, all in the hopes of getting noticed in time for the all-important Christmas shopping season. Readers of every genre are living their best lives for the new few months, but maybe none more so than fantasy fans, who are ridiculously spoiled for choice.
The new few months bring fantasy readers highly anticipated sequels from heavy hitters like Brandon Sanderson (Wind and Truth) and TJ Klune (Somewhere Beyond the Sea) as well as buzzy new titles from established favorites like Sabaa Tahir (Heir) and Andrea Stewart (The Gods Below) and Naomi Novik (Buried Deep). There’s cozy fantasy (Maiga Doocy’s Sorcery of Small Magics), dark academia (Allison Saft’s A Dark and Drowning Tide), and epic adventure (Blood of the Old Kings). There’s so much headed our way, you might find yourself reading the bulk of this list well into 2025.
Here are twenty-six of the biggest fantasy books headed our way between now and Christmas.
The Gods Below by Andrea Stewart
