Orphan Black Is Returning…as an Audiobook

Orphan Black has been resurrected from the dead, folks.

Digital fiction startup Serial Box has partnered with the sci-fi thriller’s production company to continue the series into audiobook and text formats, and, yes, Tatiana Maslany has signed on to voice the cloned sisterhood.

Orphan Black: The Next Chapter is set eight years in the future from where the series left off. Plot details are left under wraps, but the production company announced the series will feature the same characters (and hinted towards characters Cosima and Delphine having a greater story arc).

Serial Box has hired a new writing team for the production, including Malka Older as showrunner and Madeline Ashby, Mishell Baker, E.C. Myers, Heli Kennedy and Lindsay Smith as series writers.

Centered around a woman who discovers she has been the subject of an illegal human cloning experiment, Orphan Black ended in 2017 after a five-season run on BBC America in the U.S. and Space in Canada. The show won Maslany a number of awards for her (many) performances of (many) clones, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the 2016 Emmy Awards.

Serial Box’s continuation of Orphan Black marks the startup’s second IP deal since its launch in 2014, following its partnership with Marvel to produce serialized stories for Black Panther, Thor, Black Widow and Jessica Jones.

Serial Box creates team-written, television-style content in an episodic novel format. Full-fledged fictional stories are broken up into short, hour-long installments (or “episodes,” as the platform calls them), both in audio and e-book formats. Users can purchase individual episodes of a serial for $1.99 or pay upfront for the whole season.

News of the fictional adaptation comes three months after Variety reported a spinoff set in the Orphan Black universe is in the works at AMC.

So—was the show really ever dead at all?

A release date has yet to be set for the series, but stay tuned for further updates. You can revisit our 2015 chat with the series’ recurring star Jordan Gavaris here.
