The Girl on the Train Author Paula Hawkins Will Publish a New Novel in 2017

Books News Paula Hawkins

British author Paula Hawkins will publish her next book on May 2, 2017, through Riverhead Books. Titled Into the Water, the book will be similar to Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train, and will focus on a murder story in a small town.

The book’s official description reads: “When a single mother and a teenage girl each turn up dead at the bottom of the river, just weeks apart, the ensuing investigation dredges up a complicated history.”

“This story has been brewing for a good while,” Hawkins explained in a statement. “For me there is something irresistible about the stories we tell ourselves, the way voices and truths can be hidden consciously or unconsciously, memories can be washed away and whole histories submerged.”

Hawkins’ editor Seth McGrath explained how the themes of Into the Water relate to her previous work in a statement. “Just as The Girl on the Train explored voyeurism and self-perception, so does Into the Water interrogate the deceitfulness of memory and all the dangerous ways that the past can reach a long arm into the present and future,” McGrath said.

The Girl on the Train was an enormous success upon its 2015 release, and was eventually adapted into a feature film starring Emily Blunt. One has to wonder how long it’ll be before Into the Water gets a film of its own.
