HBO Drops Trailer for First-Ever All-Black Female Sketch Comedy Series

HBO has released its first trailer for Robin Thede and Issa Rae’s ensemble sketch series A Black Lady Sketch Show, in which things get star-studded very quickly.

The brainchild of co-executive producers Thede and Rae, the forthcoming series is a quick-paced narrative sketch show “set in a limitless magical reality full of dynamic, hilarious characters,” per HBO, with an all-black female core cast at its center, including Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson.

As shown in the trailer, the show will feature a rotating roster of special guests, including—take a deep breath—Rae, Laverne Cox, Kelly Rowland, Lena Waithe, Tia Mowry, Angela Bassett and Patti LaBelle, among many, many others.

Some of the sketches teased in the trailer include a self-identifying bad bitch support group (which Bassett expectedly leads), a lewd game of Never Have I Ever, some sort of parking garage shootout, a viral marriage proposal and an ill-fated hiking trip that ends in Brunson falling off the side of a mountain.

A Black Lady Sketch Show is the first project produced under the network’s two-year first-look deal with Rae, who was tapped to produce content focused on diverse voices for all HBO platforms in 2016. The show also marks the first-ever sketch comedy series to be entirely written by, directed by and starring black women, so that’s pretty damn cool.

The series premieres on Aug. 2 and you can check out the trailer below.
