Adam Sandler to Host Saturday Night Live for the First Time in May

The prodigal son returns: Former Saturday Night Live writer and cast member Adam Sandler will make his hosting debut on the venerable sketch-comedy institution next month, sharing the Studio 8H stage with musical guest Shawn Mendes on May 4, NBC announced Friday.

Sandler entered the SNL fray in 1990 as a writer, joining the show’s cast the following year, and quickly making a name for himself with holiday songs like “The Chanukah Song” and standout characters like Opera Man. He was fired from the show in 1995, later taking a playful jab at NBC while recalling getting pink-slipped in a 2010 Tonight Show interview, but between his cameos on the show since and this hosting stint, that would all appear to be water under the bridge.

“We are happy to welcome Adam back to SNL in what is sure to be a special night,” said the show’s creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels in a statement.

Sandler recently debuted his first stand-up comedy special in over two decades, Netflix’s 100% Fresh, and he’ll be taking that show on tour this summer. His next Netflix movie Murder Mystery arrives on the streamer later this year, bringing the grand total of Sandler movies on the streamer to somewhere around six billion.
