HBO has canceled adult animated series Animals after three seasons, per Deadline.
Created by Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano, who wrote and directed all the episodes, and voiced many characters, the show began as a series of animated shorts that attracted the attention of Jay and Mark Duplass, who ended up serving as executive producers on the HBO series. The series was also animated with Dan Harmon’s Starburns Industries, the studio behind Adult Swim’s hit adult animation series Rick and Morty.
Before the season three premiere, Paste interviewed creators Matarese and Luciano, who started the show based on their shared experiences voicing different animals outside the office of the New York ad agency where they worked. They pulled from the Duplass brothers’ extensive celebrity contacts to track down guest stars for their passion project, which in its first season was financed with private equity money.
Over three seasons, Animals attracted a number of high-profile guest stars, including Jessica Chastain, Jonah Hill, Whoopi Goldberg, Wanda Sykes, Marlon Wayans and Emilia Clarke.
The season three finale, “Roachella,” which featured the voices of Awkwafina, Edie Falco, Anthony Mackie, Tatiana Maslany, Jacob Tremblay and Moby, aired earlier this month and now serves as the series finale.
Before saying goodbye, though, co-creator Luciano took the time to share with fans a Spotify playlist featuring songs from all three seasons of the series.
