Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens in the First Trailer for Her New Comedy Central Series

The one and only Awkwafina (The Farewell, Crazy Rich Asians), whose breakout stardom has only continued to strengthen in 2019, is kicking off 2020 by leading a brand-new TV series: Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, the first trailer for which hit the web today (Dec. 2) ahead of the show’s Jan. 22, 2020, premiere on Comedy Central.

The clip provides a chaotic, yet charming introduction to Nora Lin (Awkwafina, aka Nora Lum), a hot mess of a 27-year-old stuck living with her family in Flushing, Queens, while she struggles to grow up and get her adult life on track. Awkwafina creates, writes and stars in Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, basing the half-hour scripted series on her own real-life experiences—think Curb Your Enthusiasm meets Broad City, only with Awkwafina as the comic dynamo at the center of it all. “Raised by her Dad (BD Wong, Mr. Robot) and Grandma (Lori Tan Chinn, Orange Is the New Black) alongside her cousin (Bowen Yang, Saturday Night Live), Nora Lin leans on her family as she navigates life and young adulthood in outer-borough NYC,” Comedy Central’s synopsis explains.

The trailer also trots out a couple of the series’ many guest stars—appearing alongside Awkwafina, Wong, Chinn and Yang (who’s experiencing a breakout of his own thanks to his fan-favorite work on SNL) are Natasha Lyonne, Laverne Cox, David Krumholtz, Simu Liu, Melissa Villaseñor, Ming-Na Wen, Jaboukie Young-White, Chris Gethard, Bella Heathcote, Matt Rogers, Michelle Buteau, Jennifer Esposito, Celia Au, Stephanie Hsu, Harry Shum Jr., Carmen M. Herlihy, Matthew Broussard, Chrissie Fit, John “Dumbfoundead” Park, Makeda Declet, Deborah S. Craig and Jamie Chung. But if there’s one of the show’s many stars to keep a particularly watchful eye on, it’s Chinn, whose foul-mouthed granny has all the makings of a serial scene-stealer.

Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, which was picked up for 10 episodes last fall, will be mostly overseen by women and directors of color, including Emmy nominee Lyonne (Russian Doll), Lucia Aniello (Broad City), Jamie Babbit (But I’m a Cheerleader), The Daniels (Swiss Army Man), Steven Tsuchida (Younger) and Anu Valia (The Other Two). You love to see it!

Again, Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens premieres Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020, at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central. Watch the trailer below.
