Carol Burnett to Receive Inaugural Namesake TV Award at Golden Globes

At next year’s Golden Globes ceremony, Carol Burnett will receive the inaugural honorary TV award, which will be named after her, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Tuesday. The award will serve as a TV counterpart to the film-centered Cecil B. DeMille Award, most recently won by Oprah Winfrey.

“For more than 50 years, comedy trailblazer Carol Burnett has been breaking barriers while making us laugh. She was the first woman to host a variety sketch show, The Carol Burnett Show. She was also the first woman to win both the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and Kennedy Center Honors,” said HFPA President Meher Tatna in a statement. “And now we add another first to her running list: the first recipient—and namesake—of the new Golden Globe top honor for achievement in television, the Carol Burnett Award.”

A five-time Golden Globe winner and the most decorated of all time in the television category, Burnett is also a best-selling author, with titles including Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story, a memoir about the comedy legend’s relationship with her late daughter, actress Carrie Hamilton.

The first Carol Burnett Award will be awarded at the 76th Golden Globes, which will be televised on NBC Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, at 8 p.m. ET.
