Watch Bill Nye, Climate Change Hero, Set the World on Fire on Last Week Tonight

On Sunday night’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Bill Nye’s kid-friendly persona entered his expletive-spewing teenage years, and justifiably so. In a segment on the necessity of the Green New Deal—a mass-scale, comprehensive set of policies to combat the ever-increasing effects of climate change—host John Oliver pivoted to a fiery Nye to explain the importance of the bill.

At the request for a fun experiment from Oliver (and after putting on his safety glasses), Nye comes for Oliver’s, the audience’s, and climate change deniers’ throats. Fed up with the lack of progress on climate policies, Nye says:

By the end of this century, if emissions keep rising, the average temperature on earth could go up by another 4-8 degrees. What I’m saying is, the planet’s on fucking fire. There are a lot of things we could do to put it out. Are any of them free? No, of course not! Nothing is free, you idiots. Grow the fuck up. You’re not children anymore, I didn’t mind explaining photosynthesis to you when you were 12. But you’re adults now, and this is an actual crisis, got it?

Nye’s segment on Last Week Tonight is a hard left-turn from the friendly figure we grew up with, but he’s still just as informative; as he so eloquently notes, we aren’t that young anymore; it’s time to grow up and actually do something with everything he’s taught us before it’s too late.
