Watch the First Trailer for Patton Oswalt’s Next Netflix Special, Annihilation

Patton Oswalt’s Annihilation is near at hand, and the beloved stand-up’s next Netflix special earns its title in its off-kilter first trailer, which you can watch above.

Netflix’s official synopsis explains that the “deeply personal and powerful stand-up special dives into the last year of Patton’s life, following the passing of his wife, and how he worked through the pain and grief by finding humor.” Annihilation is also said to tackle topics like “the angst of social media, the current political climate and being tricked by robocalls.” The middle item on that list is most prominent in the trailer, with political jokes taking up the entirety of the minute-long clip. It’s an odd way for Netflix to sell a new hour of Oswalt, to be sure.

Annihilation was filmed at the Athenaeum Theatre in Chicago, and is the follow-up to Oswalt’s acclaimed, Emmy-winning Netflix special Talking for Clapping, which landed near the top of our ranking of Oswalt’s 11 specials.

Annihilation streams on Netflix next Tuesday, Oct. 17. Watch the trailer above, see the special’s key art below and read Oswalt’s thoughts on the past 25 years of science fiction here.
