Colin Jost and Michael Che Promoted to Co-Head Writers on SNL
Photo courtesy of NBCSaturday Night Live is adding two more names to its squadron of head writers, and they’re pretty familiar ones. Weekend Update co-hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che will both be getting the title, alongside current head writers Kent Sublette and Bryan Tucker. Variety reported the news on Tuesday afternoon.
Jost and Che have been manning SNL’s Weekend Update anchor desk since 2014; before that Jost shared the desk with Cecily Strong for a few episodes. Jost was earlier a head writer for the show from 2012 to 2015. The two have had a prime piece of comedy real estate from which to satirize our increasingly polarized country, and although they have definitely grown steadier as performers in the last three years, their segment still draws mixed reviews in an overly crowded political comedy scene. NBC clearly believes in them, though; not only are Jost and Che getting this new title, but in the summer the network gave Weekend Update a weekly primetime slot on Thursday nights.
It’s a good thing the show added two more men as head writers, because we were starting to think that two men just weren’t enough to get the job done.
