Watch Phoebe Waller-Bridge Talk about Fleabag in Her Saturday Night Live Monologue

Phoebe Waller-Bridge hosted Saturday Night Live tonight. Hopefully you knew that. The creator of Fleabag and Killing Eve did a perfectly fine job, giving her sketches the energy and commitment that they deserved, and generally disappearing into the show like a regular cast member. Nothing really felt like it had her voice or vibe, though, except for the monologue. Who knows if she wrote it herself—comedians and former SNL cast members regularly get to write their own material when they host the show, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Waller-Bridge was extended the same freedom—but it has the feel of something she would write, which might just be the result of her delivery. SNL monologues tend to be a bit rigid—they have a handful of types that almost every monologue can be fit into—but this one doesn’t really reflect any of those formats, so perhaps the Emmy-winning writer and actor did write the thing herself. I mean, the show really should’ve let her. Yeah.

But hey, if you like Fleabag, and the general personality that Waller-Bridge has cultivated throughout her projects, you’ll probably dig at least part of this monologue. It’s charmingly awkward yet confident, which is kind of Waller-Bridge’s forte. Check it out below if that seems like something you’re into.
