SNL Adds Writer Mikey Day for Forthcoming Season

After a summer filled with shakeups for the Saturday Night Live cast, Vulture is now reporting that the show has cast its first new member for the forthcoming 42nd season. The rest of the new cast will be announced sometime later this month. Mikey Day was already a writer for the show, and follows the likes of Tina Fey and Jason Sudeikis in transitioning from a writer to a cast member.

Day got his start with legendary Los Angeles improv company The Groundlings. Day was hired as an SNL writer in 2013. He worked on sketches frequently with recently departed cast member Taran Killam.

Over the course of his three seasons on the show, Day was responsible for writing sketches like “Office Christmas Party,” the alien probing sketch that kept Ryan Gosling from keeping it together, and last season’s instant-classic “Farewell Mr. Bunting.” Day was also a writer and featured player on Maya and Marty, which aired this past summer on NBC.

Day will join a growing cast on SNL, one which could use his various skills. He will likely fill a role similar to that of his friend Killam, who left the show last month. Until the Oct. 1 premiere, we’ll have to deal with watching Day’s old sketches to prepare for his run on show. Check out “Office Christmas Party” below.
