Stephen Colbert Responds to #FireColbert Controversy

In case you missed it the other day, Colbert went on a truly glorious rant during his opening monologue. He really went in on Trump, largely in response to his friend John Dickerson’s treatment by the President, and it was really magical. Unfortunately, the internet did it what does and responded with criticisms of a certain line Colbert lobbed towards the President, in reference to what his mouth works best for (psst … it’s for Putin’s genitalia). Trump supporters and LGBT advocates then took to Twitter, calling for an apology with the trending hashtag, #FireColbert, which is understandable to a certain degree, but also largely unfortunate.

Last night, Colbert opened his monologue with a joking question as to whether he was still the host, which, thank the heavens, he is. He then went on to say, “I had a few choice insults for the President in return … And I don’t regret that. I believe he can take care of himself. I have jokes, he has the launch codes.” He did say that, if given the chance, he would have slightly changed the joke to be less crude, which is as much of an apology as anyone’s going to get here. Anyway, he then went on to talk about James Comey’s devastation at the fact that he might have influenced voters with his investigation. “Lordy,” indeed.
