Exclusive: Oni Games Brings Katie O’Neill’s The Tea Dragon Society to Tabletop Life

TEADRAGONS-MARKETING-1.jpgKatie O’Neill’s charming, lushly illustrated The Tea Dragon Society doesn’t hit shelves until October 18th, but Paste can exclusively announce today that Oni Games, the gaming division of Oni Press, will extend the enchanting world of Tea Dragons into the tabletop space with The Tea Dragon Society Card Game, created in cooperation with Renegade Game Studios (Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Card Game).

Designed by Steve Ellis, co-designer of Railways of the World: The Card Game and owner of Rainy Day Games, and Tyler Tinsley, designer of toys for licensors such as StarCraft, Borderlands and Skylanders, The Tea Dragon Society Card Game will hit stores in spring 2018.

“We were instantly attracted to the beautiful artwork within The Tea Dragon Society, and after absorbing the story, we felt compelled to create a game that fits this fantastic world inspired by the creative vision of Katie O’Neill,” Ellis said in a press release.

“It’s our hope that The Tea Dragon Society Card Game gives families and friends the opportunity to create and forge memories while bonding with their very own tea dragons,” Tinsley added.

O’Neill is the award-winning author of Princess Princess Ever After. The Tea Dragon Society, illustrated in O’Neill’s instantly recognizable delicate lines and gentle color palette, is a charming all-ages tale that follows Greta, a blacksmith apprentice, and the people she meets after discovering a lost Tea Dragon in the marketplace. Greta learns the dying art form of Tea Dragon care-taking from the kind teashop owners, Hesekiel and Erik. As she befriends them and their shy ward, Minette, Greta sees how the craft enriches their lives—and eventually her own.

“I didn’t know what to expect when I first played the prototype of The Tea Dragon Society Card Game, but as soon as I’d finished my first round I felt like I’d just spent a dreamy afternoon in the world of the Tea Dragons,” said O’Neill. “Everything fit the lore so perfectly, and it felt so magical and special to have such a thoughtful game based around the world I had made built by talented game designers! It feels so true to the spirit of the story, and I hope that when people play it and raise their Tea Dragons, they’ll make their own memories to share with friends and families.”

The Tea Dragon Society graphic novel will be available in comic stores on October 18th. Be sure to check out the extended preview below.
