Rep. John Lewis’ March: Book Three Wins Four American Library Association Awards

March: Book Three, the final chapter in a graphic novel trilogy by civil rights legend and Georgia congressman John Lewis, illustrator Nate Powell and author Andrew Aydin, has won a host of American Library Association Youth Media Awards today, including some of the most prestigious prizes in children’s and young adult literature.
Lewis’ comic has won the Coretta Scott King (Author) Book Award, which recognizes “an African-American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults,” the Michael L. Printz Award “for excellence in literature written for young adults,” the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award “for most distinguished informational book for children,” and finally, the YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) Award for “Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults.”
Congressman Lewis recently came under fire from President Trump after the representative said he didn’t see Trump as a “legitimate” president, following accusations of Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election.
March: Book Three is the second-ever graphic novel to win the Printz Award after Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese in 2007. Paste also ranked it as the best comic of 2016. Top Shelf Productions published the finale of the National Book Award and Eisner-winning trilogy on Aug. 2, 2016, following the first and second entries in 2013 and 2015.
