Cult Classic Napoleon Dynamite to Get Sequel in Comic Book Form

Napoleon Dynamite is one of the unlikeliest cinematic successes of the new millennium. The 2004 weirdo comedy proved to be endlessly quotable and became something of a cult hit, earning more than $46 million against a $400,000 budget. But have any of us actually wondered what the nunchuck master’s been up to since? It looks like we’ll finally have the answer this fall in a new series of comic books from IDW Publishing, according to THR.

The four-issue sequel series—the first installment of which is due in September—is set directly after the events of the film, with recently elected student body president Pedro accused of rigging the election. Napoleon and Deb are then tasked with the mission of clearing Pedro’s good name, uncovering the mystery as only they can: with extreme awkwardness.

Carlos Guzman-Verdugo and Alejandro Verdugo are the writers behind this unexpected continuation of director Jared Hess’s movie. The pair previously co-created Time Cheetah, a webcomic about “a time-traveling cat man who punches time criminals in the face.” Jorge Monlongo, an Adventure Time mainstay, will be providing the art, so at least we can expect it’ll look good.

In a statement, Verdugo had this to say about the forthcoming comic:

Napoleon Dynamite is a pop culture staple, a coming-of-age cult classic that spoke to the weirdo in all of us. It’s an honor to have the chance to expand on the lives of Napoleon, Deb and Pedro—characters that continue to resonate to this day. I still see people wearing “Vote for Pedro” t-shirts!

Guzman-Verdugo added:

With this new story, we’re focusing on matching the movie’s unique tone, finding that perfect blend of oddball comedy and charming slice-of-life drama. It’s certainly been a challenge, but one we’re sure will pay off for long-time fans.

We’ll see if they’ve succeeded in capturing that uniquely Napoleon Dynamite humor in September.
