Game Developers Conference Reveals 2017 Award Nominees

2016 was a hell of a year for games. Today, those behind the Game Developers Choice Awards announced the nominees for their 2017 show, giving us a hint at which of these impressive titles are poised to nab this year’s slew of industry accolades.

Playdead’s Inside has received the most nominations at six, including Best Design, Best Narrative and Game of the Year. Alongside the indie title are hits like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4, Campo Santo’s Firewatch, Arkane Studios’ Dishonored 2 and the critically acclaimed, obvious nominee Overwatch from Blizzard, all of which have also been nominated for Game of the Year.

Other games boasting more than one nomination are Niantic’s mega-popular AR mobile game Pokémon Go, Drool’s “rhythm violence” game (and Paste’s game of the year) Thumper, Sony’s The Last Guardian and id Software’s Doom reboot.

Among each category of nominees are copious honorable mentions, such as Numinous Games’ That Dragon, Cancer beneath Best Debut, and Uncharted 4 under Best Audio.

Double Fine head Tim Schafer will return to host the event on March 1 at 6:30 p.m, held at the San Francisco Moscone Center during the 2017 Game Developer’s Conference. GDC will be held in conjunction with the Independent Games Festival Awards. Nominees and winners of the GDC and IGF awards are chosen by members of the International Choice Awards Network, an “invitation-only organization, comprised of leading game creators from all parts of the industry.”
